Craig Colquhoun, Master Glass Artist with the House of Colquhoun, has dreamed of making the world famous Churchill Downs and celebrating the renowned Kentucky Derby in glass since May 1980. This vision began in his native England, however it was not until Craig moved to Florida, that he was able to start to realize this dream.

Craig and the artists at The House of Colquhoun have worked on recreating his dream in glass for the last four years. In doing so, they have successfully and skillfully created a 30ft long, 10ft wide, 10ft high unique masterpiece. Featuring over 4000 individually made pieces and weighing over 3 tonnes, this is truly a one of a kind achievement.

“ I believe that this glass creation is not only artistic glass at its finest, but it encompasses structural engineering and architectural glass to create a famous horse race, The Kentucky Derby at the magnificent Churchill Downs, aka ‘The Run for the Roses’, and I believe this concept will break new ground in the artistic glass world.” Craig Colquhoun, April 2005.

'We’re very excited about Mr Colquhoun’s project and eager to see the finished artwork. The image of our venerable flagship facility with it’s legendary twin spires has been captured countless times by famous artists and photographers. To have this national landmark portrayed in glass would be truly spectacular. We’re very flattered that Mr Colquhoun has chosen the home of the Kentucky Derby for this unique honor.'
Thomas H. Meeker, President and CEO of Churchill Downs Inc. March 2002

Churchill Downs recently completed a $121 million renovation and built a new clubhouse, which is where the work will be displayed in the short term.

'Mr Colquhoun's project is truly exciting and I think it will be a very popular addition here. His work pays reverence to a great sports event and a track that is a sports shrine, bringing it to life in a very original, inventive way.'
John Asher, Vice President of Communications for Churchill Downs Inc. January 2004
